You guys, I can\u2019t even begin to explain how excited I am to share this project with you! \u00a0I\u2019ve been very slowly working on my oldest son\u2019s bedroom and finally decided it was time to fast-track things and get it done. \u00a0A few months ago, I shared the plans and tutorial for this PB Teen-Inspired nightstand you see next to the bed. \u00a0I\u2019ve partnered up with Elmer\u2019s and today I\u2019m sharing the free plans and tutorial for this knockoff PB Teen Emerson double bed. \u00a0Oh, and want to hear the best part? \u00a0I built this bed for about $160 in materials (not including the mattress)!<\/p>\n

Before we get started, make sure that you download the free printable plans for this project. \u00a0It will contain your shopping list and cut list. \u00a0Now, let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n

\"Build<\/p>\n

STEP 1: \u00a0Drill pocket holes into each side of the 3\/4\u2033 plywood backing for the head board. \u00a0I used my\u00a0Kreg R3\"\"\u00a0for this (affiliate link). \u00a0It made it a lot easier to drill the pocket holes into the plywood versus flipping the wood around to drill all of the holes. \u00a0The backing needs to be inset 1\u2033 from the back of the 4\u00d74 legs. \u00a0I accomplished this by setting scrap pieces of 1\u00d76 boards and 1\/4\u2033 plywood on the floor, then setting the plywood on top of that. \u00a0The plywood should be set 1\u2033 below the top of the legs. \u00a0Glue\u00a0each side of the plywood, then clamp and attach to the legs using 1 1\/4\u2033 pocket screws.<\/p>\n

\"Build<\/p>\n

STEP 2: \u00a0For the front of the headboard, apply a good amount of wood glue\u00a0to the plywood, then place the 1\u00d74 board flush with the top of the plywood. \u00a0Continue down the plywood with the 1\u00d76 boards, then nail in place using 1 1\/4\u2033 brad nails. \u00a0<\/p>\n

If you want to distress your wood to give it the look of sawmarks, you\u2019ll want to do that with all of your bed rails, top rails, and headboard. \u00a0You can see my tutorial for doing that HERE.<\/p>\n

STEP 3: \u00a0Build the footboard using the same method as the headboard, setting the footboard in 1\u2033 from the front of the 4\u00d74 legs. \u00a0Glue and clamp, then use 1 1\/4\u2033 pocket screws to attach everything together. \u00a0Make sure to drill pocket holes into the top of the footboard for a later step.<\/p>\n

STEP 4: \u00a0The side rails will be attached with brackets, rather than glued and screwed together. \u00a0This way the bed can be taken apart to bring in the house or moved around. \u00a0To give the brackets added strength, add 1\/3 furring strips to each end of the side rails. \u00a0Attach them using wood glue and 1 1\/4\u2033 construction screws. \u00a0Drill 3\/4\u2033 pocket holes into the tops of each side rail.<\/p>\n

\"Build<\/p>\n

STEP 5: \u00a0I purchased these\u00a0bed rail brackets\"\"\u00a0(affiliate link)\u00a0on Amazon and they work great! \u00a0They hold up to 500 pounds and come in a set of four for about $15. \u00a0They\u2019re easy to install and I used 2\u2033 construction screws to attach them. \u00a0The most important thing is to make sure they are all put on in the exact same spot so that your bed rails will be level and even.<\/p>\n

STEP 6: \u00a0Attach the tops to the bedrails and footboard. \u00a0Use wood glue and 1 1\/4\u2033 pocket screws to attach them.<\/p>\n

\"EmersonSTEP 7: \u00a0Attach the interior support rails to the side rails. \u00a0The mattress for this bed was 10\u2033 thick and I wanted the mattress to sit 6\u2033 higher than the top of the rails. \u00a0I attached the 2\u00d72 rails 3 1\/2\u2033 from the bottom of the side rails and used wood glue and 2\u2033 construction screws to attach them.<\/p>\n

STEP 8: \u00a0To make this knockoff match the original, I drilled 1\u2033 holes into the sides of each of the headboard legs to screw 3\/4\u2033 lag bolts into. \u00a0I also added 4 1\/2\u2033 x 4 1\/2\u2033 square caps to the legs. \u00a0For the mortise and tenon look, I cut 1\u00d73 boards into 1\/8\u2033 thick pieces and glued and nailed them to the front and back legs. \u00a0I measured about 2 1\/2\u2033 down from the top of the legs and then attached them.<\/p>\n

\"Build<\/p>\n

STEP 9: \u00a0Fill all of the nail holes with wood filler. \u00a0I used new Elmer\u2019s color change wood filler to fill all of my nail holes. \u00a0I have always used Elmer\u2019s wood filler, but the color change was new to me. \u00a0I really liked being able to tell when my wood filler was dry and when I still needed to give it a few minutes. \u00a0The texture of it also made it so easy to work with. \u00a0Once the wood filler was dry, I sanded the entire bed down with 220 grit sandpaper then stained it with Minwax stain in Provencial. \u00a0I just wiped on one coat of stain so it wouldn\u2019t be too dark.<\/p>\n

\"Build<\/p>\n

STEP 10: \u00a0There are a few routes you can take when finishing off the top of the bed. \u00a0The original bed is wrapped in metal at the top. \u00a0Since I\u2019m all about authenticity when it comes to details like this, I purchased a piece of 2\u2033 x 3\u2033 x 10\u2032 roof flashing. \u00a0I cut it down to fit over the top of the headboard and then used a 2\u00d74 as my guide and pounded the heck out of it so the extra half inch overhang would wrap around the back. \u00a0It took a while, but it was worth it in my opinion. \u00a0The other option is to use more wood filler and smooth out the top of the headboard where the plywood and the 1\u00d74 join up. \u00a0Sand it down and then paint that top board with metallic paint so it looks like metal. \u00a0I spray painted the flashing with Rustoleum oil rubbed bronze paint.<\/p>\n

\"Build \"BuildSTEP 11: \u00a0To attach the metal to the headboard, I brushed on Elmer\u2019s ProBond, which is perfect for gluing porous and nonporous objects together. \u00a0Then I used just about every clamp in my garage to keep it in place while the glue dried overnight. \u00a0Some seeped out when I clamped it, so I just wiped it with a wet cloth. \u00a0You can see that I used a board as a flat barrier between the clamps and the metal. \u00a0I did the same on the backside, too.<\/p>\n

\"Build<\/p>\n

STEP 12: \u00a0I was pretty sad the next morning when I pulled the clamps and boards off to find that the spray paint had stuck to the boards and peeled off. \u00a0The metal flashing was glued on perfectly flat, but apparently 36 hours wasn\u2019t long enough for the spray paint to cure. \u00a0I had to move on though. \u00a0Again, adding to the authenticity, I drilled pilot holes into the flashing and then pounded 1\/2\u2033 roof nails into the holes. \u00a0The metal on the back of the headboard wasn\u2019t cooperating and didn\u2019t end up flush against the plywood like I had hoped, so I also nailed that down to keep it from bending up and looking weird. \u00a0Once the nails were added to the front, I masked off the wood and touched up the nails and peeled paint with more spray paint.<\/p>\n

STEP 13: \u00a0Once the bed is finished, it\u2019s time to move it inside and attach the mattress supports. \u00a0Cutting the 1x3s at about 58 3\/4\u2033 made them fit nicely into the bed frame. \u00a0Space them about 4\u2033 apart and then screw them into the 2\u00d72 support rails using 2\u2033 screws. \u00a0I used self-tapping screws, but I recommend drilling pilot holes to avoid any wood splitting. \u00a0I got lucky and didn\u2019t have any splitting occur. \u00a0After the slats are in, you\u2019re ready for the mattress!<\/p>\n

\"Build \"Build \"Build \"Build<\/p>\n

The bed turned out even better than I imagined! \u00a0I love the rustic look and my son loves it too! \u00a0He couldn\u2019t wait to see it when he got home from school the day I completed it. \u00a0All of the little details made it look just like the original PB Teen version, but for a fraction of the price. \u00a0The dresser is the last piece of furniture that I need to build and his room will be complete! \u00a0Well, except for the closet. \u00a0That\u2019s another project for another day. \u00a0\"Build<\/p>\n
