This bed is simple to build and only costs about $160 in materials!\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1385.jpg 680w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1385-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1385-400x300.jpg 400w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1385.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>STEP 1: \u00a0Drill pocket holes into each side of the 3\/4\u2033 plywood backing for the head board. \u00a0I used my\u00a0Kreg R3<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201%201'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=ad2di-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B000J43A7W\">\u00a0for this (affiliate link). \u00a0It made it a lot easier to drill the pocket holes into the plywood versus flipping the wood around to drill all of the holes. \u00a0The backing needs to be inset 1\u2033 from the back of the 4\u00d74 legs. \u00a0I accomplished this by setting scrap pieces of 1\u00d76 boards and 1\/4\u2033 plywood on the floor, then setting the plywood on top of that. \u00a0The plywood should be set 1\u2033 below the top of the legs. \u00a0Glue\u00a0each side of the plywood, then clamp and attach to the legs using 1 1\/4\u2033 pocket screws.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5294\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20680%20510'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"Build this gorgeous PB Teen-Inspired Rustic Double Bed using the FREE printable plans! This bed is simple to build and only costs about $160 in materials!\" width=\"510\" height=\"680\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1413.jpg 510w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1413-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1413-400x533.jpg 400w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1413.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>STEP 9: \u00a0Fill all of the nail holes with wood filler. \u00a0I used new Elmer\u2019s color change wood filler to fill all of my nail holes. \u00a0I have always used Elmer\u2019s wood filler, but the color change was new to me. \u00a0I really liked being able to tell when my wood filler was dry and when I still needed to give it a few minutes. \u00a0The texture of it also made it so easy to work with. \u00a0Once the wood filler was dry, I sanded the entire bed down with 220 grit sandpaper then stained it with Minwax stain in Provencial. \u00a0I just wiped on one coat of stain so it wouldn\u2019t be too dark.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5299\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20680%20510'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"Build this gorgeous PB Teen-Inspired Rustic Double Bed using the FREE printable plans!  This bed is simple to build and only costs about $160 in materials!\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1435.jpg 680w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1435-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1435-400x300.jpg 400w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1435.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>STEP 10: \u00a0There are a few routes you can take when finishing off the top of the bed. \u00a0The original bed is wrapped in metal at the top. \u00a0Since I\u2019m all about authenticity when it comes to details like this, I purchased a piece of 2\u2033 x 3\u2033 x 10\u2032 roof flashing. \u00a0I cut it down to fit over the top of the headboard and then used a 2\u00d74 as my guide and pounded the heck out of it so the extra half inch overhang would wrap around the back. \u00a0It took a while, but it was worth it in my opinion. \u00a0The other option is to use more wood filler and smooth out the top of the headboard where the plywood and the 1\u00d74 join up. \u00a0Sand it down and then paint that top board with metallic paint so it looks like metal. \u00a0I spray painted the flashing with Rustoleum oil rubbed bronze paint.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20680%20510'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"Build this gorgeous PB Teen-Inspired Rustic Double Bed using the FREE printable plans! This bed is simple to build and only costs about $160 in materials!\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1461.jpg 680w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1461-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1461-400x300.jpg 400w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1461.jpg\">STEP 11: \u00a0To attach the metal to the headboard, I brushed on Elmer\u2019s ProBond, which is perfect for gluing porous and nonporous objects together. \u00a0Then I used just about every clamp in my garage to keep it in place while the glue dried overnight. \u00a0Some seeped out when I clamped it, so I just wiped it with a wet cloth. \u00a0You can see that I used a board as a flat barrier between the clamps and the metal. \u00a0I did the same on the backside, too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5302\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20680%20510'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"Build this gorgeous PB Teen-Inspired Rustic Double Bed using the FREE printable plans!  This bed is simple to build and only costs about $160 in materials!\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1469.jpg 680w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1469-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1469-400x300.jpg 400w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/edited-1469.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>STEP 12: \u00a0I was pretty sad the next morning when I pulled the clamps and boards off to find that the spray paint had stuck to the boards and peeled off. \u00a0The metal flashing was glued on perfectly flat, but apparently 36 hours wasn\u2019t long enough for the spray paint to cure. \u00a0I had to move on though. \u00a0Again, adding to the authenticity, I drilled pilot holes into the flashing and then pounded 1\/2\u2033 roof nails into the holes. \u00a0The metal on the back of the headboard wasn\u2019t cooperating and didn\u2019t end up flush against the plywood like I had hoped, so I also nailed that down to keep it from bending up and looking weird. \u00a0Once the nails were added to the front, I masked off the wood and touched up the nails and peeled paint with more spray paint.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5310\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201024%20511'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"Emerson Bed - step 8\" width=\"1024\" height=\"511\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Emerson-Bed-step-8-1024x511.png 1024w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Emerson-Bed-step-8-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Emerson-Bed-step-8-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Emerson-Bed-step-8-1200x599.png 1200w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Emerson-Bed-step-8-400x200.png 400w, https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Emerson-Bed-step-8.png 1542w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/addicted2diy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Emerson-Bed-step-8-1024x511.png\"><\/p>\n<p>STEP 13: \u00a0Once the bed is finished, it\u2019s time to move it inside and attach the mattress supports. \u00a0Cutting the 1x3s at about 58 3\/4\u2033 made them fit nicely into the bed frame. \u00a0Space them about 4\u2033 apart and then screw them into the 2\u00d72 support rails using 2\u2033 screws. \u00a0I used self-tapping screws, but I recommend drilling pilot holes to avoid any wood splitting. \u00a0I got lucky and didn\u2019t have any splitting occur. \u00a0After the slats are in, you\u2019re ready for the mattress!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5290\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20680%20453'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"Build this gorgeous PB Teen-Inspired Rustic Double Bed using the FREE printable plans!
