I\u2019ve already learned. \u00a0There\u2019s always ways to improve or learn something new. \u00a0This year, I wanted to step up my skills with a router, but I knew that would take a bigger, better router with a more accurate lift and a larger table. \u00a0That being said, I didn\u2019t want the table to only serve one purpose. \u00a0I\u2019m partnering with <strong>Rockler Woodworking and Hardware<\/strong> today to show you how I took their steel router table base and modified it to include tons of storage for all of my router tools and accessories.<\/p>\n<h2>Watch The YouTube panel piece to size. \u00a0These were cut at 17 5\/8\u201d wide by 23 1\/2\u201d long. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: \u00a0Hold the side panel piece up to the dust bucket and mark along the underside of the bucket to determine where to cut the panel. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: \u00a0Rip the bottom piece of the panel down to size. \u00a0This panel was 17 5\/8\u201d x 12\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Step 4: \u00a0From the remaining piece of the side panel, rip down four (4) vertical pieces which will serve as the frame for the door. \u00a0These were 2 1\/2\u201d x 11 1\/2\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Mark And Drill The Holes For more in order to securely fasten the side pieces to the base. \u00a0Choose a drill bit that is similar in size to the predrilled holes in the table legs and drill where you have marked with the inside edge of the legs in order to accommodate the drawer slides. \u00a0For the bottom drawer, I added 1\/2\u201d and 3\/4\u201d stacked plywood shims flush with the bottom edge of the side panel. \u00a0For the top drawer, I measured 3\/4\u2033 from the top edge and again stacked the plywood and attached it with glue and brad nails.<\/p>\n<h2>Build The Drawers<\/h2>\n<p><img will need:<\/p>\n<p>2 \u2013 3\/4\u201d plywood cut at 8\u201d x 16\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2 \u2013 3\/4\u201d plywood cut at 8\u201d x 19 3\/8\u2033<\/p>\n<p>2 \u2013 3\/4\u201d plywood cut at 3\u201d x 16\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2 \u2013 3\/4\u201d plywood cut at 3\u201d x 19 3\/8\u2033<\/p>\n<p>1 \u2013 1\/4\u201d plywood cut at 16\u201d x 21\u2033 (measure and cut to size)<\/p>\n<p>Drill 3\/4\u201d pocket holes into the front and front and back pieces of the drawer boxes (19 3\/8\u2033\u201d pieces). \u00a0Assemble the drawers with wood glue and 1 1\/4\u201d pocket screws. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Attach the slides onto the shims, then install the slides to the drawers. \u00a0The drawer faces will be flush with the bottom of the drawer boxes. \u00a0To determine the height of the top drawer face, open the door to the dust bucket and measure from the bottom of the drawer to the bottom edge of the dust bucket door. \u00a0Subtract 1\/8\u201d to get the height of the drawer face. \u00a0For the bottom drawer, measure from the bottom of the drawer to the bottom of the top drawer and subtract 1\/8\u201d. \u00a0Cut the drawers so that there is a 1\/2\u201d overlay on each side. \u00a0Clamp the drawer faces to the drawer boxes and secure with 1 1\/4\u201d wood screws.<\/p>\n<h2>Install The Vertical Panel Pieces\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter 3\/4\u2033 x 10\u2033. \u00a0Pay attention to the wood grain to make sure your doors are going in the same direction as the rest of the plywood. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I had leftover 1\/4\u201d overlay hinges from when I <strong>built my laundry room cabinets<\/strong>, so I used those for these doors. \u00a0Once the hinges and doors were installed, I installed the cabinet pulls. \u00a0I only installed them on the front door and drawers. \u00a0I felt like it had a cleaner look to leave them off the side doors.<\/p>\n<h2>Install The Switch, Drawer Organizer, and Running Cord Through Side Of Table<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8139 size-full\" title=\"Learn how to modify a steel router table base to include storage and organization for all table. \u00a0The included screws cannot be used due to the plywood behind the legs, so this can be installed using 1\u2033 wood screws. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Install the Lock-Align drawer organizer to best suit your needs. \u00a0I used a starter kit as well as a wide mat kit.<\/p>\n<p>Drill a 1 1\/2\u2033 hole in the side of the router table (between the drawer slides) to feed the power cord for the switch. Use cable clamps to secure the cord to the inside panel of the router table to keep it out of the way of the drawers.<\/p>\n<h2>Install Organizers and Holders In Doors<\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8138 size-full\" title=\"Learn how to modify a steel router table base to include table for additional storage. \u00a0I created a holder for my additional insert rings using scrap plywood and poplar cutoffs from a <strong>previous project<\/strong>. \u00a0You\u2019ll cut two plywood pieces at 1 1\/4\u2033 x 5\u2033 long and one plywood piece at 1 1\/4 x 4\u2033 long. \u00a0Drill countersunk holes into the edges of the plywood and attach with 2\u2033 wood screws. \u00a0Nail the front pieces to the plywood with 3\/4\u2033 brad nails. \u00a0A 5 gallon paint stick cut down to 5\u2033 pieces would work perfectly for this. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Screw in hooks, if desired, to hang wrenches, and a featherboard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8136\"
